Supermarket Promotion Raises Over $118,000 for Cancer Research
AICR Welcomes Generous Support from Giant Food

WASHINGTON, DC – Today the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), the nation’s leading cancer research organization focusing on the role of diet, physical activity and weight management in cancer risk and survivorship, thanked Giant Food and its customers for raising $118,425 for cancer research during the month of October 2010.
One hundred percent of those proceeds, raised via an in-store campaign marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month will fund breast cancer research and other cancer research.
"Once again, we want to thank Giant and their customers for their generous support," said Kelly Browning, Executive Vice President and COO of AICR. "With these funds, we can support the kind of innovative research that’s advancing our understanding of cancer – and how we can protect ourselves against it."
In addition, thousands of AICR breast cancer brochures and health aids in both English and Spanish were distributed free to Giant customers over the course of the month.
2010 marks the second year Giant and AICR have worked together to raise funds for cancer research.

Giant provided donations slips at the point of purchase in all 179 store locations, giving their customers an opportunity to make quick, easy contributions to AICR.Giant pharmacies also purchased and distributed 156,00 English and Spanish copies of the AICR brochure Reducing Your Risk of Breast Cancer to customers free of charge, as well as 6,400 free copies of AICR's Breast Self-Examination Shower Cards in English and Spanish.
