American Institute for Cancer Research Welcomes USDA Plate Icon

USDA MyPlate blueThe American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) is thrilled to welcome the USDA's new MyPlate food image to help Americans eat a healthier diet. AICR has a unique perspective on the plate approach: We know it works.

Over a decade ago, AICR developed an approach to meal planning called The New American Plate, a simple but flexible rule-of-thumb that helps people visualize what a healthy, cancer-protective meal looks like.

AICR's New American PlateAs the First Lady stated, Americans think in terms of meals, not pyramids. That's why our award-winning New American Plate approach urges people to "fill at least 2/3 of your plate at every meal with plant foods such as whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruit, and 1/3 or less with fish, poultry or meat."

With the USDA adopting a similar plate approach, we hope it will guide Americans to reshape their meals for cancer prevention and overall health.
