As you've read in this issue of eNews getting up and moving can have a big impact on your cancer risk. The inspiring members of TeamAICR don't just get up and move, they don't just walk, and they don't even just run: they run marathons. And while they train, they raise money for cancer research, help raise awareness, and set a great example of fitness for the rest of us.
2011 was a banner year for TeamAICR. Eighty-five people ran in 3 marathons – San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, DC – and raised more than $65,000 for cancer research.
Perhaps no one exemplifies TeamAICR like this year's top individual fundraiser, Tracy LosBañes. Like many runners, Tracy came to AICR with a passion for running, and like most other runners, she had been personally touched by cancer: her father was diagnosed with cancer in 2007.
"I first decided to run for TeamAICR in 2007. At the time, dear family members were diagnosed with cancer. I had a goal to complete a Chicago Marathon and that year decided if I was going to run, it would be with a cancer charity where the money raised is going to really important research."
Since completing that marathon in 2007, Tracy and her sister Micole have continued to run with TeamAICR. Unforunately this past summer, as Tracy trained for the 2011 marathon, their father's cancer returned. Sadly, just a few weeks before the marathon, he lost his battle.
Tracy chose to honor her father by completing the marathon in his memory. In lieu of flowers for her father's funeral services, the LosBañes family asked relatives and friends to donate to TeamAICR in his name. As she said at the time, "I see how my family's efforts are going for a great cause which is why I was running for this charity in the first place."
In October, Tracy completed yet another Chicago marathon, and she and her family raised more than $3,000 for the fight against cancer. We are deeply grateful for the support and extraordinary commitment from Tracy and the entire LosBañes family, and from all of the members of TeamAICR.
If you'd like to join this inspiring group and go the extra mile (or 26.2) for the fight against cancer, you have even more opportunities than before! We are excited to announce that TeamAICR has slots in two new marathons: The Big Sur International Marathon on April 29, 2012 and the Virgin London Marathon on April 22, 2012.
