On June 5th 2011 my family lost a great man, my grandfather Clarence T. Kuhn. At the age of 84, he went to a better place after a tough fight with colon cancer. To think I can do my grandpa justice in just a few lines is impossible, but I will try to describe the man he was, and the man he has made me.

My grandfather taught my brother and I countless life lessons that usually involved baseball or the game of golf. He was a fierce competitor who always taught us the value of hard work and determination. Whether it be during an athletic endeavor or everyday life, I have my grandpa pushing me to strive to great heights.

Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to meet my other grandfather, Theodore J. Buchler, as he was also taken far too early by this unforsaken disease. I am thankful to be directly influenced by values he instilled in my Dad. I am grateful for all the stories passed down, but disappointed we couldn't make our own memories.

I have never been much of a runner, except when I had to cut weight for wrestling, but I plan to challenge myself to reach this daunting goal of 26.2 miles, with my grandpas by my side every step of the way.

I am training to participate in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 13, 2013 to benefit the American Institute for Cancer Research. Team AICR is working toward two important goals, to complete the 26.2-mile endurance event, and to raise money in support of vital research and education.

With more than 1.2 million new cancer cases in the U.S. each year, and more than 500,000 cancer deaths annually, programs that can produce even a small reduction in cancer rates offer enormous savings in lives, suffering and medical expense. AICR has been at the forefront of providing education programs and materials to help people learn how to make changes for lower cancer risk.

Please join the fight against cancer by making a donation to Team AICR. No donation is too small for this great goal!
