Hello family and friends,

I am training to participate in the Marine Corps Marathon on October 27, 2013, to benefit the American Institute for Cancer Research. TeamAICR is working toward two important goals, to complete the 26.2-mile endurance event, and to raise money in support of vital research and education.

Cancer research and the AICR are important to Sally and I.  Both of our mothers have been diagnosed with cancer.  Sally's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009.  She underwent a double mastectomy and radiation treatment and is now cancer free.  My mother was diagnosed with kidney cancer also in 2009 and had one kidney removed.  Unfortunately, this past February, we learned her kidney cancer has returned and has metastasized to other parts of her body. It is for these reasons that I am running this race in support of this charity.  It is my hope that through cancer research medical advancements will be made, the importance of diet and exercise will be emphasized, and people will not have to go through what our mothers have gone through anymore.

AICR funded research has shown that 30% to 40% of all cancers are directly linked to the foods we eat, the exercise we get, and how well we watch our weight. What this means is that we have the potential through our daily food and lifestyle choices to make a major impact on the cancer risk we each face in our lives. After Sally's mother was diagnosed with cancer, we read a lot about "super foods" that are cancer fighters.  My family firmly believes that these foods and a healthy lifestyle can and will fight cancer.

With more than 1.2 million new cancer cases in the U.S. each year, and more than 500,000 cancer deaths annually, programs that can produce even a small reduction in cancer rates offer enormous savings in lives, suffering and medical expense. As my mother battles metastasized kidney cancer, any advancement will make a difference.  She has a tough battle ahead of her and will need all of the assistance she can get.

Please join me and my family in the fight against cancer by making a donation to TeamAICR. No donation is too small for this great goal!  Thank you so much for your support!
